  • Suyao Tian

Suyao Tian is an artist, designer and independent curator residing in the Twin Cities. She specializes in water-based media to create abstract, dreamlike paintings inspired by her upbringing as a single child during China’s one-child-only policy in the 80’s. Suyao draws inspiration from childhood memories, nature, imagination, and subconscious thinking for her creations. She creates symbolic figures connected toother creatures, shapes, and unknown forms, creating an imaginative world where everything is interconnected and dependent on each other, with the entire world considered crucial. The process of creation and the audience’s interpretation of her work holds more importance in the realm of free imagination, and the significance of her work lies in the “no specific meaning” which represents the essence of art and imagination itself.

Since 1996 I have been teaching art to children and adults at The Art Academy in Saint Paul, MN. I taught art to kindergarten through eighth grades at Holy Family Academy in St. Louis Park, MN for eleven years. The common thread is representational drawing and painting in the classical realist tradition. Now that my children are grown I am excited to spend more time with my brushes, paints and husband.

In painting nature or objects, I see things that are not readily noticed. Snow may seem white, but on closer look, there are notes of lavender, blues, pinks and yellows. There are so many colors and characteristics of water, trees and sky. I look at certain images and fall in love with the composition. I get that feeling - this is going to be a good painting.

My painting provides a sort of relief valve. The emotive expression in the work is of more importance to me than detailed illustration, and as I explored different mediums, I loved the movement of oil paint. My adventure is the interaction between formality and play. Use of whimsey, vying for perceived detail.

I believe discovery happens over and over again. I first started photographing rare books in 1993 – this is when I got hooked on taking pictures of pictures, making new pictures from hand writing, musical sketches, marginalia, and the small, richly preserved paintings of illuminators. In my work I have met with great collectors and tried my best to enter into the unique world each collection creates. I usually feel like I am on a treasure hunt, that I am uncovering valuable images that have their own longing to be seen and to be relevant today. For my photography there is no better landscape for this discovery process than the library.

Seeing with Fresh Eyes... More than anything, I’m inspired by the natural world. It thrills me to see abstract qualities of design are right there, uncontrived, in the gardens, woods and ordinary moments that inspire my paintings. While my newer acrylics are pure creative exploration, my watercolors blend realism and abstraction. Every painting is a thrill and a challenge. I love working with contrasts— in colors, shapes, patterns, and rhythms. All my senses come into play when I’m working. Lots of love and careful thought go into all that I do. I hope you enjoy my artwork and share your experience with your friends.

I find strong personal connections to the idea of collecting. Objects that – by physical identity, texture, pattern or color – represent my theories and observations about life concepts. The foundation of my work revolves around collecting appreciation and motivation from my observation of nature. I see nature as the ultimate artist. From its forms and color palettes to its functions; everything that nature produces is used as a motivational tool to create and expand on my artistic output.

  • David Jensen

David Jensen specializes in gestural paintings. His work acts as a documentation of the physical areas of the studio where the works are created. Time is a crucial part of his composition, expressed through a dense layering of materials that result from washed, gestural mark making, which is then erased and covered up again with new marks and washes. He uses acrylic paint, spray paint, pastels, moss, and studio debris to build up a surface over time. He draws inspiration from paint sinks, weathered floors, sun bleached fabrics, and other materials that embody their own history. Jensen has been featured in exhibitions in Minneapolis, MN, at the New York Design Center, and Southampton, NY and is represented by Bicycle Fine Art in New York City and Grand Hand Gallery in Saint Paul. His work has been featured in Rolling Stone, NY Times Style Magazine, Time, Billboard, GQ, and Interview.

  • Reflections by Megan

Back in 2016, my husband (Alec) asked me (Megan) to paint him a lion. I had recently been dabbling in painting again but hadn't given it serious time since high school, had never painted an animal, and certainly not on this size canvas (4'x5'!). It took a couple of years for me to even start, as I was pretty intimidated. When I finally finished, we were both really proud of how it turned out and decided to make a deal. If I completed a set of ten animals, I could look into making reproductions and turning this into a business. Immediately it sounded exciting, but in all honesty, I didn't think anything would really come of it.

Another year went by, and I had only completed two more animals. A friend from church saw my work and decided to commission me to paint a quirky ostrich. Seeing how people reacted to this whimsical, happy ostrich sparked the realization that I could evoke happy emotions with my art. So that's what I set out to do. It's taken me time to really figure out what my artistic style is, but it's been fun trying new things and pushing myself to keep the detail while also adding an element of "whimsy."

In the fall of 2021, we took a step of faith; Alec joined me in this career fulltime. We are still learning the ins and outs of running a business together, while also raising our daughter (and another on the way) at home, but we love it. It's a whole new adventure with no guidebook which is sometimes scary or frustrating, but we know this is what we're supposed to be doing. This isn't just a dream that we are reaching for, but rather a calling we both feel we have.

We don't know what the future holds, but we are excited to be where we are right here and now. Raising our family together, meeting new people, getting to spend our time doing the things that matter to us and serving others. This is a life I never had imagined for myself, but I am so grateful that this is where we have been led. Our prayer is that our business is a blessing to our family and people, and that it would be a reflection of love and joy to all we interact with.

  • Bonnie Hinz

With her unique combination of glass and metal art, Bonnie has Though fascinated with glass from childhood, and always having a creative nature, Bonnie did not begin working with glass until adulthood. She dabbled with stained glass while working as an interior designer. Frustrated by the “flatness” of stained glass, Bonnie yearned for a three-dimensional glass experience. After attending a blown glass exhibit at a nearby museum, she was inspired to pursue her passion by studying glass blowing at Anoka-Ramsey Community College for four years, while continuing to work full time. She then built a glass blowing studio at her home and has been working there since 2004.

During this time she also began developing ways to incorporate metal with glass, and took several classes through the Guild of Metal smiths to refine her skills. The strong, industrial, and durable nature of metal and how it can work in harmony with the fragile, organic nature of glass captivates her. She enjoys combining the two materials into seamlessly integrated designs.

As a former interior designer, she has a natural affinity with color. Her designs swirl with layers of bright and arresting colors.

Her inspiration comes from diverse organic shapes--from leaves, flowers and pods to the gracefully curving lines of grasses, roots and trees.

  • Geri Erickson

My name is Geri…I was a CFO in my previous life, and am currently a Mandala Artist and creator of Center Peace Art. Initially I was so drawn to this art form, I just knew I needed to learn more about it…how to create this beautiful art. While painting, I learned that my typically very busy mind got very quiet, much needed quiet. Mandalas are a sacred symbol used in meditation, healing and prayer. Every mandala is unique and hand painted and no two are identical. Each comes from a flow state of allowing the mandala to unfold and become what it is meant to be. Creating mandalas has truly brought me peace at the center of who I am.

  • Duane Ditty

Duane Ditty was born in 1955 and grew up in North Minneapolis which provided him an expansive ground for experimentation, especially alongside the Mississippi River with its old bridges and steel metal scrap yards. He has occupied his current studio in the historic Northrup King Building since 1996, and worked there steadily until 2018 when, after a cancer diagnosis and subsequent bone marrow transplant, he took a period of four years to recover his health. • Mary Bacon

In my botanical paintings am idealizing the universal flower or leaf, seeing the leaf or flower as an icon, an object of contemplation and meditation. My process for botanicals and abstracts has become both more precise and more colorblock in style, with crisp edges to the shapes I am creating.

Most of my flower paintings are designed with circular mandala or labyrinth shapes in mind, representing calm and wholeness for the psyche.

The linear sections within some of these paintings are like the lines of a musical composition, or lines of poetry. I am telling my story line by line, a story of the beauty I saw in a particular place and time.

My Indigo Child Series represents the new generation, which has lots of wonderful energy to bring to the world, and I created this series of abstracts using the colors assigned to these types of energy: Indigo, violet, and turquoise for the highest consciousness; greens and emeralds for heart and earth energies, yellows for the sun and the power of transformation; reds, oranges and pinks for action and purpose.

My work is mainly layers of oil paint on canvas, sometimes with mixed media to add texture to my abstract works.
